10 Ways to Get Organized, Because You Matter

Top 10 Ways to Get Organized

Getting organized is often at the top of the list when it comes to making a change in your life. And part of self-care includes having a plan. Most people feel like their life could be more organized and therefore more productive and less stressful. And it’s true that when you’re organized, you do get more done and you do feel more in control of your space and time. The following ten strategies will help you get more organized at home, at work, and in your personal life.

#1 Purge and Pare Down

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to get organized is that they go out and shop for storage containers and solutions first. The first step to any organization process should be to sort through your belongings and purge. Get rid of what you don’t use, don’t need, and what is broken or damaged. Your closet is the easiest example. Instead of buying more shoe racks or another closet shelving system, clean out your closet. Get rid of the clothing that doesn’t fit, is damaged, or that you never wear.

#2 Create a Place for Everything

Once you’ve pared down your belongings, then you can begin to invest in storage solutions. Choose a logical place for everything. Many people have the habit of putting their belongings in a closet or cupboard. As long as it is out of sight, they feel organized. A better solution is to create logical storage systems. For example, you might keep all your cleaning supplies in one carryall that you can tote from room to room. Or you might keep cleaning supplies for each room in that room.

#3 Create Systems for Repeatable Tasks

Systems are step-by-step processes that you can use to simplify repeatable tasks. For example, you might create a system for sorting your mail. When you get the mail you immediately open the important mail, file the mail to read later, and shred the mail that needs to be disposed of. Other systems might include cleaning, planning, cooking and preparing meals, and caring for pets. Make a list of the tasks that you repeat every day. Create routines for these tasks.

#4 Invest in Backup Software and Storage

Back up your files online and offline. Pictures, finances, recipes, and more are stored on your computer. Invest in a backup system. You might use a cloud storage system. You can also back up your computer to an external hard drive. Back on at least weekly, more if your life is on your computer and you can’t risk losing data.

#5 Use Financial/Accounting Software

Finances are often one of the most disorganized areas that people complain about. The solution is simple. Find an accounting or bookkeeping software or application that works for your needs. Get one that is both on your computer and your mobile device. Look for a system that allows you to budget, pay off debt, save money, plan for taxes, and know at a glance how much you have in your bank account.

#6 Use a Calendar or Planning System

This sounds like a no brainer but so many people don’t use a calendar that supports them to succeed. There are many different systems and tools to choose from. Like your accounting software, it’s often easiest if you find a system that you can use both on your computer and on your phone. It can be something simple, and free, like Google Calendar, or you might prefer something with more features like Evernote.

#7 Make A List of Your SMART Goals
Writing down your goals makes them more permanent. So, grab a notebook or that calendar or planning system that you’ve chosen and make a list of your goals. What specifically do you want to accomplish? When do you want to accomplish it by? Why do you want to accomplish it? What is your motivation? How will your life change and improve?
SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound. Once you’ve identified your goals, take some time to break them down into smaller pieces that you can manage. Add those pieces and their deadlines to your planner and get to work.

#8 Clean and Organize 15 Minutes Daily

Dedicate 15 – 20 minutes a day straightening your home. You might do it at the end of the day, after dinner and before you sit down on the couch for television. Integrating this daily habit into your life ensures that your home stays clean and welcoming. And, doing this at the end of every day means that you wake up to a clean home. It starts the day off right.
You might also dedicate the last ten minutes of the workday to cleaning off your desk. Then, when you come in the next day, your environment will support you to succeed. Although to be fair, super creative people need a spot that is raw with creativity. So perhaps give yourself a little corner that you can keep your "creative mess" until it takes form more fully.

#9 Establish Daily Priorities

Look at your goals and your calendar each day. Identify two to three tasks that you want to accomplish, above all else. These are the tasks that you’ll focus on and tackle first. Establishing daily priorities helps you organize your day, your time, and it makes you more productive. Look to prioritize tasks that have the biggest impact on your success.

#10 Focus on One Project at a Time

Many people believe that they are fully capable of multitasking. Unfortunately, this is a myth. The human brain cannot multitask. It cannot do two or more things at once. Instead, your attention is divided. You might be able to bounce back and forth between several tasks so that it seems like you’re multitasking.
However, each time you shift focus you lose a bit of time and productivity. If you want to get more done and actually be more organized, focus on one project at a time. Your attention won’t be divided, you’ll have better results, and you won’t feel as overwhelmed.

Where do you start? Start your organization process with the area of your life or home that feels the most out of control. It might be your schedule, your refrigerator, or your finances. Whatever feels like the most frightening thing to tackle is probably where you should start because it’ll have the biggest impact on your life. And once you get that big mess organized, everything else might feel easier to take care of.

Check That Skin Spot; It May Save Your Life

Check your skin, I did.

In 2008, I noticed a spot on my left calf. It bothered me because it didn’t “feel” or look right. I had my primary physician look at it during my yearly check- up but he wasn’t worried about it. As the months passed I did note that my mark, this excrescence, was getting larger and changing in shape. I finally scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist. She didn’t like the way it looked so I agreed to do a biopsy.

For three weeks I worried about the possibility this growth could be cancerous. Were my things in order? Was my Advanced Directive and Will updated? Was I living the life I wanted to live? Well the time came for me to get my biopsy results and I sat in the waiting room for nearly an hour with no word. I was asked several times if I was OK and offered water which was unusual for a follow-up medical exam.  I got really nervous.

A few minutes later, I was finally called by my doctor and she asked if I was ready for the procedure to have the growth removed? “What?” I asked. “Does that mean it’s CANC--?”
She cut me off and told me, “Breathe.  It is a benign growth, not cancer.” I was immediately relieved. However, the pathologist recommended the growth be completely removed as soon as possible, just to be sure. This growth which is technically called a dermatomyofibroma was unusually large and in an odd location of my body. Apparently, this kind of growth would appear on a person’s upper body. I agreed I wanted it to be removed.

I realized no matter how uncomfortable it is to have things checked by doctors sometimes, it is necessary to save one’s life at most and have peace of mind at least. A complete excision of the growth was gone. The only temporary set back was having stitches, minor discomfort and orders to modify my exercise for a couple of weeks. This is when having a trainer really comes in handy. So while I’m healing I’m working out my upper body, doing push-ups, and yoga. Once I’m back to normal I will resume my combination of full body strength training, cardio and yoga.

What should you look for?
So do you have something you need checked out? A strange pain somewhere, an itch, an odd mark somewhere in your body, even if you don’t get much sun exposure? Do you have an ongoing cough, or headache that won’t go away? Or do you have a nagging feeling something may not be right in your body or mind like depression, or anxiety? Trust yourself and get it checked, especially if you are fortunate enough to have insurance. I know it’s not fun to get a colonoscopy, GYN exam, mammography, see a proctologist, or even getting a regular physical but the peace of mind and treatment possibilities may be worth it.

I have included some links for anything related to skin cancer in case you want to check some information. Also, WebMD.com is very popular for checking  many kinds symptoms and conditions. But most importantly, breathe and know you always have options. I’m not sure what I would be saying if my results were different, but I do know that the five years I got with my mother after her cancer diagnosis and treatment were cherished beyond words.

Here is some more information on general skin care. Aside from using sunscreen to prevent sun damage, there are other steps to take to keep you minimize sun damage.
  1.  Keep skin hydrated, both inside and out by drinking plenty of liquids (preferably water) and using proper skin moisturizers.
  2. Before heading out into the anywhere where you will have sun exposure, apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before.
  3. If you want a glow, try self-tanners that are made for a variety of skin types.
  4. Check any odd spots and remember that no matter what your skin color is, everyone is prone to getting sun damage. Additionally, other factors other than sun exposure can lead to skin growths, so check everywhere in your body, it’s better to be safe.
  5. Get plenty of rest. The saying that says "I'll sleep when I die" is ironic because lack of sleep causes aging, and all sorts of health issues.
There is one more link for you to check www.skincancertakesfriends.org for information on how Olay had teamed up with the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery to sponsor free screenings with a dermatologic surgeon for a friend and you.

Follow ME--Lil' Tips I've Learned and Wanna Share About Twitter

Because I know more and more of us are taking advantage of how Twitter can be used, I thought I'd share a few tips I learned and am learning. Whether you are new Twitter or a reluctant Tweeter, I hope this tips are helpful and make your Tweeting more fun and productive.

  • People can be lazy when it comes to social media....so when it comes to Twitter for instance, I suggest you create a link for them so they can just click in addition to giving them your name (handle).
  • To get more followers, go ahead and start following people. From what I've learned, the more you follow the more people will follow you back. This is the first tip I ever got and it was from @jordanasands and it works.
  • Take advantage or trends like "FF" which is "Follow Friday", pick of few people you follow Tweet their handles and so that others will follow them. They will return the favor and this increases followers for everyone. Also, send "Shout outs" to some of your favorite people, followers so appreciate this.
  • Put a picture on your profile as soon as you can, people don't like following something or someone they can't see.
  • Use the Bio section to put something that says something special and important about you.
  • Spruce up your page, it's relatively simple and fast, it goes a long way because unlike human beauty,Twitter beauty counts a lot!
  • Dont pay for services they claim to get you followers. You want followers that actually care about your Tweets.
  • Learn the lingo, Favoriting, Hashtag, Tweeps, Tweeups, etc, are common terms used. Be and stay updated, because social media changes very fast.
  • Follow people and organizations you really care about without worrying if you'll be followed back. But watch for those followers who follow just to unfollow you to look like they have more genuine followers. They are SO annoying.
  • Re-tweet things you really like and you'll eventually get re-tweeted too.
  • Use smart and free third party internet tools to learn more and get more followers. Here is a great post with amazing resources and links. Of course, I use the free ones. http://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip149.htm
So there you go. I'm sure there are so many more things to explore but to keep things simple and save you time...I'll keep this short and sweet....

If you have some tips for me, go ahead and share them with us on the comment section below.

Oh and by the way...follow me here.............
