This is Diana (Diana Navarro) is featuring A-list Casting Director/Dramatic Arts Trainer Robert Russell, while celebrating His Birthday

This will be at the Fantastic Glass House Tavern  in Manhattan’s Theater District.

When: Tuesday, October 5th--8:00 PM
Where: Glass House Tavern
252 W. 47th St (Between Broadway an 8th Ave, South Side of Street)

Who is Robert Russell?

"Robert Russell is Casting. Period."
Heather Auble Lansky, Casting Director
FOX Television NetworkLos Angeles , Ca.

"Robert Russell has the ability to bring out the best in a talent. Compared to other casting directors, he helps a talent dispel their fears and gives them the opportunity to truly express their talent and abilities. As a person, Robert has a genuine warmth and respect for others. He enjoys helping others achieve their goals and encourages them to go after their dreams."
Ellen Wasser-Hrin, DirectorMMA Management Inc.

Robert is one of the most respected Casting Director/Producer/Trainers in the entertainment business from coast to coast and is an asset to anyone's panel across the globe. With over 30 years under his belt, Russell has worked for such heavyweights as Warner Brothers/Telepictures, Mark Burnett, Abel Ferrara, Ben Silverman, Roy Bank (President of Television at Merv Griffin Entertainment), VH-1, and every major television network. He has cast everything from indie to feature films, test shows and countless pilots. Robert is often sought out by Executive Producer heavyweights Howard Schultz, Scott St. John, Gary Marks, George David Monas, Michael Canter, Brian Graden, Jeff Olde, Jacqui Pitman and Lois Clark Curran. His body of work in feature casting is astonishing. You name them... he's worked with them.

Russell comes from a long family line of successful people in the entertainment industry, and continues to be the family’s go-to Casting Director. Cousins Robin Antin is the creator/founder of The Pussycat Dolls and had major success with her reality show The Search For the Next Pussycat Doll on the CW.  Jonathan Antin is the famous celebrity hairdresser to the stars who graced the Bravo Network with 3 seasons of his hit show Blowout. Steven Antin is a successful screenwriter/director who wrote and directed the feature film Burlesque with Cher and Christina Aguilera, in which Robert also did the initial casting. Steven also re-wrote the screenplay for the re-make of the feature film Gloria starring Sharon Stone. Steven also has an extensive body of work as a very successful actor in the 80's with screen credits such as The Accused, opposite Jodi Foster who won the Oscar for best actress and Steven Spielberg’s The Goonies. Robert's Aunt was the creative director at Motown for a great many years, and Neil Antin is a successful cameraman for Sony Pictures and shows like Extra and Inside Edition. In 1991 feature film Inside Monkey Zetterland, is a quirky comedy about Robert's family, starring Patricia Arquette, Martha Plimpton, Debi Mazar, Ricki Lake, Sandra Bernhard & Sofia Coppola.

In the reality TV world as far back as the 90's, Robert Russell is still well known as "The Go To Casting Guru" in NYC, and has been responsible for auditioning and casting such big money winners such as: Jay Overbye for ABC'S The Bachelor, Zora Andritch for FOX's hit Joe Millionaire, and back to back million dollar winners, Jenna Morasca and Ethan Zohn for CBS's Survivor. He was the remote Casting Director/Producer for 13 seasons of NYC open calls for the CBS hit show Big Brother, as well the NYC casting for FOX’s Mega Game Show The Moment of Truth. He has cast Nickelodeon's Hi Jinx, Mark Burnett's 4 groundbreaking shows; CBS's Rock Star INXS, NBC's The Restaurant,  NBC's The Apprentice and NBC's The Casino - which was the first reality show shot in high definition at a million dollars an episode in Las Vegas at The Golden Nugget Casino! Other credits include Bravo's major hit show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, VH1's My Generation, and a live reality series also on NBC called Phenomenon, starring Chris Angel & Uri Geller.

Robert Russell has worked as a Casting Producer on a plethora of network reality shows back when reality TV was at its height, and once resided as the in-house casting expert and intricate wheel in developing The New York Reality TV School in 2008. This created a blitzed media storm around the world!
Robert also has a knack for finding that special "X" factor, whether he is working with seasoned actors, children or especially newcomers. He gives everyone a chance to show their stuff and then finds the best place for them to showcase their talents. Russell lectures, teaches, advises and frequents casting seminars, workshops, industry panels and continues to scout talent all over the country for feature projects. He is a strong presence in the New York Actor Community and was a staple industry judge at The Manhattan Monologue Slam for 7 years.
Robert sits on board as the Casting Director/Producer of the Sony authorized live stage version of the Off Broadway phenomenal hit "The Gong Show Live" along side Leslie Gold at NYC's famous "The Cutting Room". This side splitting well oiled complete recreation of Chuck Barris' iconic 70's zany variety TV show, is still selling out shows and currently running for 6 years strong! http://www.gongshowlive.net/

Currently, Russell is casting an extraordinary feature project with a star studded cast, based on the Kent State tragedy during the Vietnam War in the late 60's. He also creates and develops his own shows and is producing and developing a slew of other projects including The Black Widow, with Jeanette Lee - the number one ranked pool player in the world, and is in the process of developing another show with Dennis Rodman."

As the creator of "The 30 Minute Miracle" for actors (which is the shot heard round' the New York actor community), Russell privately conditions and trains actors for feature films. He states, "It’s a truth serum from a Casting Directors perspective". He spends much of his time paying it forward and creating armies of brilliant actors with his upfront, honest and in-your-face process. Robert’s technique is extremely unique, as it has been honed and polished through his long extensive casting background.  He focuses on conditioning the actors mind and making them diverse in their range. “I train my actors like a trainer would train a fighter.  It takes a lot of hard work and discipline to mold a diverse actor so they are not pigeon holed into one category.”

"Robert Russell loves actors, and he gets them; from the beginner to the pro, he provokes and inspires -- with utmost respect and attention to craft -- to win trust, confidence, and the best possible performance every time."
Dinah Lenney, Nurse Shirley on "ER", NBC

"Robert is one of the most intelligent, down to earth, industry savvy Casting Directors I have ever met. He consistently works with A-List celebrities, and has a knack for selecting amazing talent. I had the pleasure to work with him on a project for NBC in 2003, and he still remains one of my most favorite people in the business!"
Susanna Hari, Actor/Producer

"I first worked with Robert when the two of us cast NBC's prime time reality competition "Phenomenon." Of the three teams casting this show, Robert and I made a unique duo. With him on the east coast and me on the west coast, we were the team that cast seven of the show's ten contestants, including the show's winner! Not only was our team unique, Robert was unique. Many people in the entertainment industry are eager to tell you of all their "connections," but when it comes time to ask of those "connections," those braggers look the other way. Robert, on the other hand, had friends, not loose "connections." And, he was not afraid to call upon them. Much of our success in casting the show lay in his relentless phone calls to friends who advertised our casting needs on the radio, over the internet, through print, and amongst colleagues. Robert's keen eye for talent, developed through his vast experience casting television, was also key to our success. On a personal note, Robert is always supportive of my career choices, encouraging me every step of the way. He thinks big and pushes others to do so, as well. He is eager for challenges, ready to work hard, and enthusiastic in his efforts and successes. I would jump at the opportunity to work with Robert again, and I am happy to call him my friend."
Stephanie Pearlman, Casting ProducerLos Angeles , Ca.

Say Yes to Events That Elevate You...No to same ol' same ol' 8/18/13 in New York City

It's amazing to me how many people say NO to things that are good for them. No to healthy food, no to healthy romantic relationships, NO to meeting people who are good for them..NO! NO! NO!

Why? Well, the reasons abound and differ from person to person. But can it be any of these for you? Because of:
  • past disappointments,
  • not wanting to leave your so called comfort zone,
  • fear of the unknown and being disappointed,
  • fear of not being accepted,
  • perceived costs (financial/emotional)...and the list goes on.

However, you must know that we humans are social creatures. If you are in place like, say New York City with so many people, one can ironically feel very isolated. It takes time, patience and creativity to find your social nook.

Research shows that the more we enrich our lives by getting out of our comfort zone, the healthier our brains and bodies will be. Hence a better and longer life overall. If we don't, sadly we begin to atrophy and wither away a bit a time. Where are you?

I am in a place in my life, that after much loss, I wanted to claim what I was entitled to. That is being around healthy, loving, creative people to share joyful times with. I had some challenges finding this so I decided to take the relationships which have taken me years to cultivate and bring people together. May it be 3 or 300 people, I desire one thing. And that happens to be to create a reason to celebrate life and each other. This gives us the energy and sustenance to handle our personal challenges with vigor and hope. My Sunday Summer SoirĂ©e and other events I put together are away of gathering together with quality people, in quality place and doing quality activities.  I hope you will join in and know you CAN be among friends.

Where: ALEO RESTAURANT & BAR

When: 8/18/13 Starting at 7pm

An evening of elegance with music, amazing people, fine ambiance and that means YOU.

My philosophy and mission are:

THERE WILL BE REASONS TO CELEBRATE LIFE AND EACH OTHER!
And
To Bring musicians, artists, lovers of celebration together for mingling, business and joyful encounters

There is no cover or minimum and you will be impressed at the delicious food choices, wonderful drinks and on how we

Found this gem in the NYC jungle...

Here is what else to expect:

-We will have specially selected singers who will be joining us in song along with talk, laughter and connection. Our guitarist will be the amazing Larry Luger, accompanied by a bassist Dave Hofstra to enhance your music and dining experience.

-We are celebrating our very own Geri Berman's birthday (one of the most connected and generous people you'll ever meet).

-We will have wonderful photographers memorializing the event.

-Founder of "Rough Around the Edges" Joe Corbalis will be bringing a very special artist "Dee" to show her amazing works.

-And more suprises

In Memory and My Memory of Roy Miller

This post is an excerpt from my book "Your Not Crazy, It's Paranormal"

If I can speak to Death itself I would say to it "Stop taking the good ones!" In the last few months I've had to hear of 4 deaths of people who were active in the arts, outgoing, friendly and loved by many. Most recently, as in today, I heard someone I met a couple of years ago and was quite fond of, Roy Miller passed away suddenly from a brief illness at the age of 52. I am devastated for his family, friends, myself and the world of art and theater.

I met him at one of my favorite local Broadway restaurants where my companion Vincent Musolino and I were at the bar sampling the wines and sangria. There was an empty chair next to me at the end of the bar and a gentleman sat. Vincent in his adorable way knocked a candle over and almost burned us all up...so we laughed about it (once the fire was put out). We shared stories about almost burning our respective homes with candles at one point or another.

When he stepped away briefly, the bartender whispered to me, "Wow, he is really enjoying speaking to you two". I didn't understand so I asked what the big deal was. "Do you know who that is?" He continued whispering. "No, but we like him." We honestly answered. "That's Roy Miller the big Broadway Producer." Then Roy returned and I continued on actually sharing with him I had been given the title of "Broadway Partner" for GHOST the Broadway Musical. Well obviously he knew the Producers of that show as well as the history, forecast and many interesting details. That night we agreed to stay in touch and he would be a guest for my radio show.

I followed up but he told me via email he was extremely busy but that when things slowed down, he'd be happy to be on my show and had many funny stories to share. Ironically, his email said to me in an almost foreshadowing way that in reality it would probably be while he was "in the hereafter" before he'd slow down enough to be on my show". I was sad because I was so eager to have him on but I knew we'd be seeing each other again so I didn't worry.

Some time later I did indeed see him again at the restaurant where we were both regulars and got the chance to continue to speak, hear each other sing and meet each others friends. Just recently, I was going back to look for him since I didn't want to call him due to his schedule and knew he'd be in down time at the restaurant but was told he had not been in there for awhile and we all thought that was odd. I felt in my intuitive gut something was wrong and was about to email him to ask how he was doing and announce my show's format had changed and I could speak to him anytime including the restaurant but sadly just got the news he passed away.

I wish I got to know him a bit better and hear those funny stories he wanted to share. But alas he has crossed over. I pray for healing to his loved ones and thank him even now because as an empath I KNOW his energy continues to spread light to us all. Thank you Roy Miller for the brief time I got to spend with you and sharing your open heart with so many through your beautiful work.

Those circular lights in these pictures are what I and many call ORBS. They were quite pronounced in this pictures and I would like to think they are loving spirit guides reminding us we are everlasting as is love and light.

AS per other written articles I wanted to include here that "Miller is survived by his parents, a brother and a sister. His family and friends request that donations in his memory be made to the Actors Fund, 729 Seventh Ave., New York, N.Y., 10019 (actorsfund.org)."

Unacknowledged New York City Talent By The "Powers That Be"

Thisisdiana site,

Note: This is also a radio Broadcast with special guests named below.
Click here to listen: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/this-is-diana/2013/07/22/unacknowledged-new-york-city-talent-by-the-powers-that-be

Unacknowledged New York Talent

I was born and raised in New York City. Specifically in The Bronx, also lived in Brooklyn and did everything else in Manhattan. I sang professionally as a child from the age of 7 onward in The Bronx, Manhattan Brooklyn and Queens (sorry Staten Island I was just a kid and didn't control where we went singin'). Because I chose a path of academics and work my spiritual journey, I didn't sing professionally again until sometime after I returned back from living in San Francisco, about 2005).

When I did return, I was graciously welcomed by a special group of talented musicians including, singer and event producer Sandy Jordan, musicians Grammy nominee Larry Luger, Bob Arkin, and Angelo Ferrara very early on. As the years have gone on I've gotten to know many others dear to me like Ted Muzio, Rick Bogart, and Steven Lowenthal. I have met amazing musicians and singers alike who I will be featuring on the ongoing basis, (see below). As an Intuitive Empath with a Psychology and Research background, I can speak from my observations, interviews, and an actual experiential point of view. Throughout these years I have made some observations that are simply, well bothering the heck outta me.

There is a vibrant but hidden New York City music and artistic population...Why aren't they more recognized by the powers that be? And by "powers that be" I mean venue owners, critics, reviewers, media, music managers, promoters, agents and peers that influence what is seen and heard in the New York industry

Ponder this:
a) Where can we find places where vocalists, musicians, dancers, producers, directors, writers, actors, fine artists (painters, etc.) and other creative artists express their passion,
b) Get compensated appropriately and generously,
c) Get a fair chance of getting in without the current politics of who knows who?

And how can we:
  • Avoid greedy venue owner/managers ridiculously overpriced covers, dinners and drink minimums,
  • Avoid being forced to see the same mediocre talent in the "top" venues,
  • Let these "powers that be", that we are taking back the power and the status quo, same ol' same ol' is just not good enough anymore?

What is True talent and What is Mediocre?
Therein lies the big question. There is 1) Natural talent, those born with an innate ability to create a particular art and/or,
2) Those who are trained in their field of passion but with true potential to excel and therefore often do, 3) Then there is the mediocre circle, those who are determined and dogged about performing an art but fall substantially short in innate ability. They excel anyway due to misuse of their personal and financial resources, unethical practices, e.g., sleeping their way up, paying off the powers that be, etc.

True Talent:
For brevity's sake, I will include natural and trained talent here and mediocre separately. Some say talent is subjective. That it depends on the observer. However there are standards set for the arts to determine talent. For those standards and guidelines, you'll have to do your googling...but for the purposes of this piece I will give a brief example of a talented vocalist. Whether a born singer or trained one, a vocalist has to be able to love what they do, connect with their audience authentically, utilize their unique qualities (timbre, vibrato, volume), know basic technique (while working on making it better and better), sing on key, improvise if necessary, work well with accompaniment, have good phrasing and respect fellow musicians with a combination of confidence and humility. Ambition is great but not at the cost of running over others in the same field because, yes we are connected and there are consequences to that.

Mediocre:
On the other hand, a mediocre performer and singer is one that uses questionable tools (paying the gatekeepers off, mis-using their sexuality, phony personality, etc.) to find an audience other than using innate or trained ability. They may somewhat sound like they sing but even a child can tell that this is not a good singer. They may sings off key, or strange-unpleasant vibrato/timbre that doesn't work well with the music being expressed or, overly loud/low or what I personally call the roller coaster effect where there are so many ups and downs in the note you can't tell what it's suppose to be (and gives me motion sickness) and that doesn't work well with the music being expressed.

As mentioned above, many "successful" but mediocre musicians in the New York scene utilize some of the questionable tools and do get the better venues, critics/writers to give them great reviews, and opportunities for gigs and exposure. There is nothing wrong with that if only it weren't for the fact that it is unbalanced. If it were interspersed with the truly talented and it wasn't so darn obvious maybe it would be more palatable. People do notice. Audiences don't want to come out to the same old mediocre performers and those who come in droves are desperate for live entertainment and get the tainted promotion from agents and critics. What a conundrum indeed.

So Where are the Truly Talented?
So I ask again, why aren't there more truly talented singers out there in the known venues? Why do we see the same so-so performers spoken, promoted and written about over and over again by a handful of "elite" but somewhat powerful promoters and critics, discouraging audiences to come out to live events of many authentically talented performers? That's where the unseen, unacknowledged talent comes in. The talented are intermixed with the mediocre and emerging, yet to be discovered, talented. They are often in the small, unknown venues. This brings me to another point. Many venue owners want to keep their venues afloat financially and care very little about booking actual talent. They simply want people who will draw audiences, fill their rooms and buy their food and drinks. That's just the way it seems to be. If more venues opened with more emphasis on talent, and creative shows, I'm sure they would cross from the red to the black quickly and with quality. That is another reason why so many venues come and go and are marginally filled with customers.

What about the rest of the artists, writers, directors, producers, actors, other performers, and painters? I would say with some confidence that the information is transferable to other artistic industries. Why? Because as a trained observer I have spoken to, read, and seen the same characteristics in other music industries, writing, and entertainment in general. Unless something happens where the right connection, introduction, discovery is made, many talented souls in any of these above mentioned fields, through no fault of their own, will remain undiscovered and un-shared with the world. But not if I can help it...

What am I Doing About it?
I can't change the world...but I can do my bit to live my life purpose...Spread light, love and truth anyway I can. I took a page from my predecessors in the business and every chance I get I create a space and event to gather all this amazing talent in pure celebration. For Instance The Sunday Summer SoirĂ©e with Diana and Friends https://www.facebook.com/events/195156540643755/

I also use my presence, blog, radio broadcasts, social media and personal resources to support those who genuinely care about their craft, themselves and others.

I share the space and make introductions via my intuitive social connection abilities to appropriate associations.

Additionally, I would recommend to these artists:
  1.  To keep working on your craft.
  2.  Stretch yourself out of your comfort zone,
  3.  Don't allow anyone or anything discourage you,
  4. Gage your talent accurately by having several objective ways of being judged on your particular artistic expression,
  5. Activate your freewill ability of empowerment. Meaning, stay true to you and remain strong at your core
  6. Restrain from over-sharing your work projects until the deals are sealed to prevent competition from unfairly taking your opportunities,
  7. Use social media, it's not that difficult to use and you don't have to use them all at first. Thanks to this, anyone can record themselves, and at least share your wares with the world.
  8. Cultivate your audience, following and SHARE, there is truly enough for us all.
Meet the First Group of the Best
I am grateful to have met some of New York's MOST talented performers...this is just a few of the dozens my absolute favorites who are not only talented but support their peers in multiple ways. For the purposes of this article will mention in no specific order David Giardina, ESTEREdiva, David Vernon, and Maria Giorgio. We are also speaking Sandy Jordan who knows the business for many years and will share her point of view.

Believe me I don't mean to leave out any of my dear ones, so forgive if you are not mentioned in his piece. I fully plan to do follow-ups and features so just email me...to be featured.

While some not quite so talented people will always slip and slide UP to society pages for various reasons but I will do my part in making sure those who are there truly talented, working, sharing and loving what they do, get the credit they deserve. The powers that be come back to us all.

Diana Navarro Singing with David Giardina is June Moon Heaven

I have always loved singing. I sing for pleasure, love and joy. When I did the June Moon Show with David Giardina, I got to experience all these feelings and share them with a live audience.

Thanks to social media I can share it with you too. We had great musicians, Stu Chamberlain (piano), Susan Mitchel (violin), and Daniel Berges (guitar).

Do you think David and I should do another show soon? Hmmm my psychic gut says YES!

Enjoy, and there is more to come...

David Giardina is a talented soul. Please check his amazing television program "Celebrating Art!". A simple click below takes you there:
