Valentine's Day...Why do Some People Hate it? How to Love it Again

Every year I see more and more anti-Valentine's Day parties. In fact, there is a tradition of them out there. But why? What is this holiday anyway?

This isn't a history of the holiday...for that, just go to your search engine and well yawn. I'm more interested as an intuitive in how we can transform this day from a dreaded day, to a day we can all benefit from.

If you are single, it is very easy to feel left out this day if we look around and see that this day seems geared only for couples in love. I know, I've had plenty of solo Valentine's day and during that time, I didn't think it was so cute.

Now I can imagine all the ways I can share love, not just romantic with those around me.

So instead of feeling jealous of juicy lovers near by, or hating all the couples who seem to be in romantic bliss, I try to think of all the people, children and animals I love.

How about you?

Single or coupled...can you think of anyone who can benefit from a little sharing of love. You don't have to "buy" into the commercialism of it all. I'm willing to bet there are people or animals in your life you can bring joy to by showing them extra love this day (and ideally, every day).

I'm showing my love by dedicating my radio programming to a show called "For the Love of Animals" with a great panel of diverse animal lovers who will speak on how they show feel about our animal companions.

If this isn't your cause, how about sending a nice note, handmade, electronic or give a small gift that comes from your heart to:

  • Someone in a hospital who may not have visitors
  • A neighbor who doesn't seem to have nearby friends or family
  • Seniors citizens
  • A cause that matters like assisting those with disabilities, or legitimate organization that seeks to cure a disease or heal an ill in the world
  • Someone who just underwent a breakup or other big loss
  • The grocery store clerk that always smiles at you
  • Give yourself and a beloved pet the gift of unconditional love by either adopting or helping animal rescuers save lives
  • LOVE YOURSELF by choosing a life of health, healing, forgiveness and joy.
So should you choose to celebrate with a romantic partner, a party or alone, keep in mind, you are always loved and never truly alone.
